BULLETINS
NEW – The ice first moved in Galena Wednesday afternoon, and the clock stopped at the tripod at 1:22 PM on May 7th!
River level at Galena is 115.5 feet at 10:00 AM on Friday which is up 5.5 feet overnight, and we have chunk ice and small pans going by with a lot of open water this Friday midday.
Just a reminder that water starts coming up over the road west of the airport at 119 feet, with no other serious issues until 125 feet at the pilings. (Updated 5/9)
NEW – Yukon River Watch Daily Summary 5/8/2025
NWS Products
An ESF has been issued for the Middle Yukon River – link
Summary
Mid Yukon River:
The Tanana River is open and ice free down to the confluence of the Yukon River, and water levels are low but are within the normal range for this time of year.
Reports from Rampart indicate thinner than normal ice but it still appears strong. Flight observations looking upstream from the confluence of the Tanana and Yukon Rivers indicate similar conditions, with mostly in-place, strong ice.
Between Tanana and Ruby there long reaches of of lifted and shifted sheets of ice with sections of in-place ice on the downstream side of each followed by intermittent long stretches of open water. The Boneyard has degraded sheets of ice and Big Eddy upstream of Ruby has large sheets of ice that appear to be weak and rotting in place.
Bishop’s Rock had weak looking in-place ice at the time of the flight; however ice started running at Galena between 4-5pm Thursday evening during which time an observer in Koyukuk reported that the Yukon was also moving ice there.
Mid Yukon River Watch photos from today’s flight – link
Upper Yukon River:
A small ice jam continues to sit in place downstream from Fort Yukon near Six Mile Island. Areas downstream continue to decay with more open leads and small areas breaking up between Fort Yukon to Beaver. Light runs of ice are possible from upstream as this small jams stays in place with low flows. Water levels will continue to fluctuate until this small jam moves downstream. There is a clear channel upriver from Fort Yukon with stranded ice in areas.
Ice is packed in front of Fort Yukon with some stronger sheet ice at the downstream end of this channel. This ice may stay in place until higher water arrives next week with warming temperatures over the weekend.
Downstream from Fort Yukon the river is showing much more open water and small areas breaking up all the way to Beaver. Water levels at Beaver have come up 4 feet since yesterday and were steady midday today.
Further downstream the ice transitions to in place ice near Stevens and down through the canyon to Rampart. With the breakup front stalled and expected low flows on the Yukon River over the next several days the flood threat at Stevens Village is low.
Breakup will work it’s way slowly downstream with Beaver breaking up over the next day or two and Stevens Village likely breaking up over the weekend or early next week. Ice in the canyon is the strongest observed over the last few days and may take some time to start breaking up. Tributaries were not flowing, which is very unsual for this time of year.
Upper Yukon River Watch photos from today’s flight – link
Plans for tomorrow
The Mid Yukon River Watch plans to check Bishop’s Rock and see extent of running ice below Galena. Then fly back upriver to see how much ice has cleared.
The Upper Yukon River Watch has ended flights and will be monitoring river conditions by satellite and through local observations
The next email summary is planned for tomorrow evening.

NEW – Public Media in America is once again under attack in Washington. The Corporation for Public Broadcasting has been targeted for defunding, not only for any new appropriations, but the White House has also requested Congress to claw back forward funding for fiscal years 2026 and 2027, which have already been approved. While KIYU is currently in good financial shape, without CPB, the future of all public stations will be bleak. CPB funding costs each American approximately $1.60 per year in taxes. While I do hear people’s concerns about government spending, is this the place to cut? I don’t think so.
Our communities stand to lose this and more:
● Equipment and delivery of Emergency Alert System messaging. ● Daily information source for community news and information about health, safety, weather, and community events. ● We provide free over the air access to news from a locally owned and operated media business ● Local voices and messaging that is from our community. ● Local and state election coverage of municipal and tribal government ● Local arts and culture programming that build community and celebrate language and culture.
The public broadcasting system is money well spent.
